The Early Development Instrument (EDI)

The Early Development Instrument (EDI) is a population-based tool used for measuring children’s readiness to learn at five years of age.

“Readiness for school,” as measured by the EDI, refers to the ability of a child to meet the task demands of school and, in particular, of grade one. The EDI gathers information on five domains of children’s development, which includes physical health and well-being, social competence, emotional maturity, language and cognitive development and communication and general knowledge. The EDI is filled out by Senior Kindergarten teachers for each child in their class. Results are then grouped by community and neighbourhood.

For more information on the development and use of the EDI across Ontario and Canada, visit the Offord Centre website.
